About Me
Football field maintenance

When I tell people that I'm the landscaper who looks after our team's football field they are really impressed, and a little jealous. I don't think they know how much work it is though - it's definitely trickier than keeping your backyard looking green. Not only does my football field need to look lush, it also needs to be perfectly even so that the ball doesn't bounce at crazy angles, and not so soft that the players boots sink in. I need to keep up with all of the latest tricks that landscapers have, and I write these up here so that everyone can give them a try on their own fields.

Commonly Asked Questions About Landscaping Shrubs

Brad Craig

When looking for landscape vegetation, a homeowner is faced with the choice between plants, trees and shrubs. The choice between the three types of landscape vegetation is largely personal but should be informed by various other factors in addition to your personal preference.

This article provides answers to a few commonly asked questions about the use of shrubs as the preferred choice of landscape vegetation.

What Are the Benefit of Using Shrubs in Landscape?

There are several benefits that a homeowner stands to enjoy by investing in landscape shrubs. For one, shrubs are advantageous in the sense that they add texture and rich color to the landscape design. A large number of landscaping shrubs have rough-looking leaves and branches that gives the landscape a naturally rugged feeling that breaks monotony within the landscape.

Shrubs add color to the landscape by maintaining their green through all seasons, or by providing a beautiful contrast between the color of foliage shrubs and that of other plants on the landscape.

Another benefit of having shrubs on the landscape is that shrubs are quite versatile in terms of their usage. One of the most important uses of landscape shrubs is the creation of privacy hedges. Unlike landscape plants and trees, shrubs can grow into bushes because they have several stems that grow from the ground. Appropriate pruning and trimming of these bushes can easily transform the shrub into a privacy hedge.

What Are Some Commonly Used Landscaping Shrubs?

Homeowners are literally spoilt for choice when looking for shrubs due to the wide variety available. Some of the common landscape shrubs include:

  • Forsythisa: This shrub is preferred for its high aesthetic value thanks to its yellow flowers during the spring. The best time to have forsythia shrubs on your landscape would be after the dull winter, as this would accentuate the beauty of its yellow flowers. This shrub is often used as a specimen plant, for foundation planting and for the creation of borders among other functions.
  • Rose of Sharon: This is another commonly used shrub which comes in several colors including white, pink, and purple. This shrub is preferred for the fact that it provides great screening, especially when planted along the landscape boundary.
  • Lilac shrubs: This shrub is primarily used on landscapes because for the pleasant odor that the shrub produces. In addition to this, fully-bloomed lilac shrubs are available in yellow and white varieties for that special aesthetic effect.
